A cyclist has sued a California cycling academy after a computer malfunction led to the death of a classmate.
John Smeets, 39, of San Francisco was riding a bike on June 13 when he was hit by a BMW driven by Anthony Smeet, 46, according to a lawsuit filed in San Francisco Superior Court.
The two were biking on a bike path in a park when Smees bike struck the BMW, which was also on the path, the suit says.
Smeets was rushed to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, according the lawsuit.
The crash prompted an investigation and a plea agreement with the school to pay $250,000 in damages, the lawsuit says.
The school said in a statement it had launched a review to determine whether the school had violated California state law and that it would cooperate with any investigation.SMEETS was the only person injured in the crash, the statement said.
